Avakas Gorge is situated in the untouched peninsula of Akamas. Just northwest of Paphos, it offers spectalucar views as well as a variety of indigenious flora and fauna; including endangered species such as the centauria akamantis (a plant ONLY found in this gorge).
Carved out of limestone over the course of thousands of years, rising up to 30 meters and dramatically narrowing at one point, the gorge is considered a trekker's paradise by many. It has proved to be a popular, if difficult, hike as the track winds it way along and occasionally over the stream that is responsible for this masterpiece of nature.
The gorge is approximately 3kms long, and sensible clothes and sturdy footwear is recommended for anyone that attempts it. Avoid the wet winter months and early spring as rainfall can cause the stream to swell and often becomes to deep to cross without swimming through it. Always tell someone of your plans if you wish to hike alone.
To get to the gorge, follow the E701 past Chloraka, Kissonerga, Potima and Coral Bay. Keep going straight along the St. George Avenue. After about 6.5 km, the road will fork, the main part of the road continuing to the left; take the right fork and follow the road. Keep in mind that after an initial 1km the road will turn into a dirt track and an off-road vehicle with 4-wheel drive is recommended. Follow the road until you see signs for the Avakas Gorge.
