The Fort of São João Baptista Berlengas , or simply Berlengas Fortaleza , located on the island of Berlenga Grande , in the archipelago of Berlengas , integrating the entire defensive Peniche , in the district of Leiria in Portugal .In 1513 , with the support of Queen Leonor, monks of the Order of St. Jerome settled there for the purpose of providing navigational aid and victims of frequent shipwrecks that coast Atlantic , beset by pirates, founding the Monastery of Mercy Berlenga, where, since 1953 , stands a restaurant. However, food shortages, disease and the constant assaults of pirates and privateers Moroccans , Algerians , British and French, have made life impossible retreat of monks , often incommunicado due to the inclemency of the sea.
